History

In Turmares Tarifa we have been dedicated to whale and dolphin watching for more than 25 YEARS. This project was born thanks to the dream of a group of nature enthusiasts, who dared to explore a sector that was practically unknown in Spain at that time.

Turmares - Patrones

The origins of Turmares date back to 1996, when one of the founding partners started to go out in search of cetaceans with the first passengers. A few years later, in 1999, the company was formalised and became the first company to offer cetacean watching in the Strait of Gibraltar.

At that time, there was little knowledge about the species that could be sighted in the Strait of Gibraltar. In line with our philosophy of development and sustainability, we went a step further and created the figure of the biologist and scientist guides, a team made up of biologists and experts from various scientific disciplines, who contribute their specialized knowledge to enrich the passengers’ experience. We will call them all, in short, biologist-guides, in charge of informing passengers and transmitting our passion and knowledge of these species. In addition, they collect data on the sightings, take photographs and document the information obtained, contributing valuable materials for the research on cetaceans carried out by our scientific department.

Simultaneously, when we created the Scientific and Environmental Education Department with the biologist-guides, we also founded the Audiovisual Department to equip all the boats of our sea trips with professional cameras and lenses, both for video and photography. This is as essential for the photo-identification and filming of cetacean behavior, as it is indispensable for publishing content, since it allows us to maintain an extensive archive of high-quality photographs and footage for marketing and for professional production companies.
Moreover, all this is what unites us as partners: a shared love of nature, the sea, and our passion for filming and photography.
